The Beginning

Sisters Helping Sisters, Inc. (SHS) began in 1996 when [then] single mom, Teri Worten, hung a few flyers in local libraries. She wanted to create a supportive environment for women- like herself - that were parenting alone.

For her work with single mothers over the years, she has been featured on:

  • Fox 4 Morning Show

  • KSHB Action News

  • The Kansas City Call

  • The Kansas City, Kansan

  • The Kansas City Star

  • NPR's Walt Bodine Radio Show

The "Comma"

After fifteen years of single parenting, Worten re-married in 2006. She wed John L. Brooks, the pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri. After her re-marriage, she diligently sought a new leader to continue the vision of the Network. But she found no one. Optimistically, hoping that someone else would eventually "pick up" the support groups, she said "goodbye" to the ladies and settled into her new life.Teri Worten Brooks featured as single mother commentator on Fox 4 News
"Just because I re-married, it did not mean that the Network was no longer needed in the community" says Brooks, "Single mothers still need a place to laugh, exchange ideas and learn about community resources that will make their lives easier."
